This removes a background by colour: pick the colour to drop, set how far from it still counts, and everything matching becomes transparent. On product shots, logos, screenshots and anything photographed against a plain backdrop, the result is clean.

It is not a machine-learning matting model, and it does not pretend to be. Hair, fur, motion blur and busy backgrounds need trained segmentation, which means either a 40 MB model download or sending your photograph to somebody else’s server. Neither belongs in a tool that promises nothing leaves your device.

How to use it

  3. Raise the tolerance until the background clears without eating the subject.
  4. Soften the edge if it looks cut out, then download the PNG.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of images does this handle well?
Anything with a reasonably uniform background: product photos on white, logos, screenshots, scanned documents, studio portraits on a plain backdrop.
What does it struggle with?
Hair and fur, semi-transparent edges, motion blur, and backgrounds that share colours with the subject. Those need a trained segmentation model rather than a colour test.
Why not use an AI model like the big sites do?
Because it would mean either a 40 MB download before you could start, or uploading your photograph to a server. This tool keeps the file on your device, and says clearly where the limits are instead of hiding them.
Why does the edge look harsh?
A hard threshold produces a hard edge. Increase the feather setting to fade the boundary, which reads far more naturally against a new background.
What format should I save as?
PNG or WebP. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparency would be flattened to black or white.
