Format choice is a trade-off. JPEG is small but lossy and has no transparency. PNG is lossless with transparency but large for photographs. WebP is usually 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality and supports transparency, which makes it the sensible default for the web.

This converter decodes your image and re-encodes it in the format you pick, entirely on your device.

How to use it

  1. Drop in an image, or several.
  2. Choose the output format and quality.
  3. Download the converted files.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?
No. It is decoded onto a canvas in your browser and re-encoded there. Nothing is transmitted, which matters because images carry location data and personal content.
Which format should I use?
WebP for the web — smaller than JPEG at the same quality, and it supports transparency. JPEG when you need maximum compatibility with older software. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges or transparency.
Why can I not export AVIF?
Browsers can decode AVIF but almost none can encode it from a canvas. Offering it would produce a file silently saved as something else, so it is left out rather than faked.
Does converting lose quality?
Going to JPEG or WebP re-compresses, so some loss is unavoidable. Converting to PNG is lossless, but it cannot recover detail an earlier JPEG already discarded.
