Why does it work in places without formatting?
Because it is not formatting. Each styled letter is a distinct Unicode character, so it survives anywhere plain text does.
Is it accessible?
No. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them as mathematical symbols. Never use them for meaningful content such as headings or names.
Why do some styles show boxes?
The device lacks a font covering that Unicode block. The characters are correct; the font cannot draw them.
